About this book
The History of the 36th (Ulster) Division carries epigraphs credited to Virgil and to Chaucer, among others. The text says that in Ulster not a strike occurred throughout the course of the war. The text says Major-General C. H. Powell, an officer with a distinguished record in the Indian Army, was appointed to the command of the Division.
The text lists the 107th Infantry Brigade, with, among others, the 8th Battn. Royal Irish Rifles (East Belfast Volunteers) and the 9th Battn. Royal Irish Rifles (West Belfast Volunteers). The text includes a long list of names with ranks and units, among them Keith, Sgt. J., and Kelly, C.Q.M.S. C. D. The text says Fontaine-Notre-Dame, on the road from Bapaume to Cambrai, was stormed, a mere two and a half miles from Cambrai. The text says the attack on Bourlon Wood was a failure, and that the troops, who went round the western slopes in gallant fashion, were woefully thinned out by machine-gun fire and unable to hold their ground.
