The preface identifies the great business of human life as fulfilling the purpose of life by glorifying God and saving one's own soul. The discourse argues that Christ comes to save people from sin, and from death and wrath as the wages of sin.
The discussion of dress quotes a precept calling for modest apparel, sobriety and good works rather than elaborate hair, gold, pearls or costly clothing. The commentary treats such costly adornment as contrary to modesty and unbecoming to women professing godliness.
