About this book
The Following of Christ, in Four Books is by Thomas à Kempis. The text counsels not to esteem oneself better than others, lest perhaps one be accounted worse in the sight of God. Chapter VIII, headed "Of shunning too much familiarity", says not to discover the heart to every one, but to treat of one's affairs with a man that is wise and feareth God.
Chapter XXVI, on the eminence of a free mind, says in an address to the Lord that it is the work of a perfect man never to let one's mind slacken from attending to heavenly things. One prayer in the text says "Oh! that with thy presence thou wouldst inflame, burn, and transform me into thyself, that I may be made one spirit with thee."
