About this book

Norse Mythology, subtitled "or, the Religion of Our Forefathers," is by R. B. Anderson, professor of the Scandinavian languages in the University of Wisconsin. The title page promises all the myths of the Eddas, systematized and interpreted, with an introduction, vocabulary and index. This is the second edition, printed in Chicago in 1876, and it is dedicated to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

The text discusses Loke at length, including his cutting of Sif's hair, the handle of Thor's mallet Mjolner, his part in Balder's death and the many poetic names given to him. Another passage lists scenes that could make pictures, such as the norns at the Urdar fountain and Thor putting a pot on his head. Section VI, "Thor and Thrym," gives the myth in full from the lay of Thrym in the Elder Edda, in the author's own translation.
