About this book

Philip Gibbs spent the First World War as an accredited correspondent with the British armies in France, and here he tells the parts he could not print while the fighting went on. Freed from wartime censorship, he writes plainly about the mud and slaughter of the Western Front, the gulf between soldiers and the politicians and public at home, and the disillusion that set in as the casualties mounted. He honors the courage of ordinary men while refusing to dress up the waste and horror he witnessed. The result is one of the most searching English accounts of the war and its human cost. Philip Gibbs

Sir Philip Gibbs (1877-1962) was an English journalist and author who served as an official war correspondent during the First World War. Knighted for his reporting, he wrote widely on the conflict and its aftermath, producing memoirs, history, and novels drawn from his frontline experience.
