About this book
Sketches in Bedlam is a book of 1823 whose full title describes it as characteristic traits of insanity, shown in the cases of one hundred and forty patients of both sexes at New Bethlem. Names on the title page include Margaret Nicholson, James Hatfield, Patrick Walsh and Bannister Truelock, and the title speaks of patients transferred from Old Bethlem. It adds a short history of the establishment, with its rules, regulations, forms of admission and treatment of patients.
The entries are notes under each patient's name, with age, origin or occupation where given. One records that Margaret Nicholson was aged eighty-two and was consigned to Old Bethlem in August 1786. Another passage discusses the habit of tobacco and snuff among patients, and another describes William Robertson, a market-gardener admitted in March 1822. One entry records a discharge on 25 July 1822.
