About this book

Old French Romances, Done into English is by William Morris, with an introduction by Joseph Jacobs. The introduction says that a volume containing the Cante-Fable of Aucassin et Nicolete holds four other tales, which Mr. William Morris has now made part of English literature by writing them out again in English. The text says that as recently as 1895 a learned Teuton, Dr. Ernst Kuhn, pointed out the existence of an Ethiopic and of an Arabic version of the legend.

A tale says that Sir Robin found on his wife's right thigh the black spot and was sore grieving, and that on the morrow he went to Sir Raoul and said before his lord that he had lost his wager. The tale says the fair lady was much sorrowful and heavy of heart when she called to mind how she had cast her lord out of his house. A tale says Messire Thibault did so much in arms that in a little while the enemy of the Soudan was brought under, whereof much was the Soudan rejoiced.

William Morris

William Morris (1834-1896) was an English poet, designer, and socialist whose wallpapers and textiles helped define the Arts and Crafts movement. Late in life he turned to prose romances set in imagined lands, and those books are now regarded as foundations of modern fantasy literature.
