About this book
A crowded train carriage sets the Beauchamp family's seaside holiday in motion. Mrs. Beauchamp travels from Liverpool Street with five children, their nurse, and a jumble of parcels, while her husband remains in London. Tommy wriggles under a seat, Amy needs comfort after a fall, and eldest daughter Susie tries to supervise her siblings. Her wish to be useful soon tangles with bossiness and the fear that her mother loves the younger children more.
G. R. Glasgow's children's story follows family life on an English seaside vacation, where small quarrels can give way to real danger. A later scene finds Susie comforting Dick on the rocks as the light fades and the tide rises. Her concern for him reveals a different side of the child who was so quick to find fault on the train. Readers can enjoy the lively dialogue and recognize the complicated mix of affection, jealousy, and responsibility within a large family.
