About this book
The study concerns beliefs about the origins of the earth, people, animals, plants and topographical features, describing the mythology of the Philippines as rich, varied and little explored. The opening discussion regards preserving and studying origin myths as important for reconstructing human history, which the text identifies as the chief aim of anthropology. An account quoted from Worcester describes a belief that a dead Tagbanua entered a cave and followed a road down into the bowels of the earth.
A story tells of Balitúk striking an enormous rock with his spear during an ascent, causing a large jet of water to burst forth instantly. The story has Ihîk ask to drink first, while his brothers object that the last born among them should not be the first to drink.
