About this book
The Thousand Buddhas presents ancient Buddhist paintings from the cave-temples of Tun-huang on the western frontier of China, recovered and described by Aurel Stein. The book carries an introductory essay by Laurence Binyon. A plate description says that one sees Amitābha enthroned on a lotus between Avalokiteśvara and Mahāsthāma, with two lesser Bodhisattvas in front and a row of well-individualized disciples behind.
The text says the narrative-pictures depicting episodes from the Jātakas were originally painted in a purely native manner, the whole theme being bodily translated into Chinese terms. The text says that a painting of Avalokiteśvara conducting a soul is exceptionally well preserved, and that its style and the costume of the woman point to a date more recent than late T‘ang. A plate description says that a painting, incomplete on all sides, still measures close on six feet across by five feet in height and represents but the upper portion of a much larger composition.
