About this book

Our Churches and Chapels by Atticus is described on its title page as a critical and historical account of every place of worship in Preston. The note to the reader says the general satisfaction given by the sketches, combined with a desire, largely expressed, to see them republished in book form, is the principal excuse offered for the appearance of the volume.

The text says there are three parsons at our Parish Church, Canon Parr, who is the seventeenth vicar in a regular line of succession since the Reformation, and two curates. The text says nothing will be said of the ordinary service of the Parish Church except that it would look better of three fourths of the congregation if they would not leave the responses to a paid choir. A sketch in the text describes a man who is frank, independent and educated, has no sham in him, works hard, and is a sort of clerical Inigo Jones. The text says there is a service at St. Luke's every Wednesday evening, that it is not much cared for, and that only about 30 attend it.
