About this book
The Clergyman's Hand-book of Law, subtitled The Law of Church and Grave, is by Charles M. Scanlan, LL.B. The contents list chapters on constitutional law, statutory law, unincorporated church societies and incorporated religious societies. Other chapters in the contents cover heresy and secession, excommunication, elections, officers, meetings and church records.
Still other chapters cover church tribunals, state courts, evidence, contracts, pews and property. The text says that where the consideration is a religious service duly performed, there seems to be no objection, so a minister may collect for preaching a sermon, attending the sick, or saying prayers. The text also says that an incorporated church has no authority to enter into a contract for an ulterior purpose, such as the employment of a vessel for the purpose of an excursion.
