About this book

Fine wool on wild mountain sheep gives John Muir an answer to those who believe nature always needs improving. His opening essay examines animal coverings closely, using the sheep near Mount Shasta to defend the value of wildness. Published in 1918, this collection gathers letters and articles about western landscapes. Its contents range across California, Utah, Nevada, Washington and Oregon, bringing mountain ascents, forests, rivers and travel observations into the same volume.

The Nevada passage traces changes brought by glaciers and shrinking lakes before turning to the ruins of mining towns. Tall smokestacks, damaged furnaces and machinery half buried in sand record the brief lives of industrial settlements. Sagebrush and lizards occupy places once shaped by busy streets and workshops. Readers interested in nature writing can follow Muir's movement between close observation and broad landscape history, and consider how his descriptions weigh human enterprise against the enduring processes of the land.
