About this book
In Idaho's Black Rim country, cattle brands settle questions of ownership, while a man's reputation can make a whole town wary. Tom Lorrigan inherits the Devil's Tooth ranch after a series of family losses and sets his sights on a fortune in cattle, horses and land. His ambition grows out of a harsh upbringing, and neighboring ranchers suspect that his reach extends into their herds.
Bower gives this western novel a rough social world as well as a rugged landscape. A later scene finds Lance Lorrigan waking on a saloon pool table, then confronting men who disrupted a dance he provided. Arguments over pride, money and family standing turn readily into fights. Readers interested in ranch life and the force of local reputation will find those concerns worked into sharp dialogue, frontier rivalries and the opening promise of romance.
