About this book
The Rev. Edward L. Cutts, D.D., wrote this account of parish clergy in medieval England, dated 1898 on the title page and including an image from a fifteenth century manuscript. The preface says a great mass of material has lately been brought within reach of the student, bearing upon the religious life and customs of the English people from their conversion in the sixth and seventh centuries to the Reformation.
One passage discusses the temples of early kings, including Redwald, king of the East Anglians, who worshipped Christ at one altar while his queen kept the old worship at another in the same building, and the priest Coifi at Godmundingham. Another turns to ancient place-names as a source of information. A record has a rector letting his church and parsonage to farm for 8 pounds a year while keeping the lodging at the churchyard gate.
