About this book

Carolyn Wells's Patty's Success has twenty chapters, from Welcome Home and A Splendid Tree to Department G, The Thursday Club and Christine Comes. Chapter I opens with someone grumbling about waiting for a steamer, and Mr. Fairfield thanks Mrs. Allen for arranging a hearty welcome home. Christmas plans follow, and it is settled that Patty will spend the holiday in New York with Elise.

The talk is quick and teasing. Roger promises a tree, a dance and a boar's head, Patty adds carols and waits, and when Elise asks what waits are, Patty says they are just waits. In another scene Patty makes tea by the library fire and asks Kenneth to fetch Darby and Juliet, and he brings a glass globe in from the dining room where the goldfish were left. In another passage Christine, who dreads facing strangers at dinner, is told by Nan that Mr. Hepworth will be the only other guest.
