About this book
Pen Drawing: An Illustrated Treatise is by Charles Donagh Maginnis. The contents list chapters on Style in Pen Drawing, Materials, Technique, Values, Practical Problems, Architectural Drawing and Decorative Drawing. The first chapter, Style in Pen Drawing, says art, with its finite means, cannot hope to record the infinite variety and complexity of Nature, and so contents itself with a partial statement.
The text says sculpture reproduces the forms of Nature, but discards the color. According to the text, the principal note of the photograph is made by the dark part of the roof under the porch relieved against the light wall beyond, and is therefore logically adopted as the principal note of Mr. Gregg's sketch also. The text says decorative illustrations may be broadly classified under three heads, the first being those wherein the composition and the treatment are both conventional.
