About this book

Penelope’s Experiences in Scotland, by Kate Douglas Wiggin, is described as extracts from the commonplace book of Penelope Hamilton. The contents list names, among others, A Triangular Alliance, Edina, Scotia’s Darling Seat and Susanna Crum cudna say. Salemina says dryly that she is not a stickler for dates, but that if the girls could only contrive to fix a few periods in their minds, just in a general way, they would not be so shamefully befogged.

John Knox is quoted as recording that the myst was so thick that skairse micht onie man espy another. A verse names the parritch an’ the heather-bell, the snawdrap on the shaw and the bit lam’s bleatin’ on the braes, and asks, How can I leave them a’? A narrator who says I speaks soothingly, saying Let us talk about the lions, and asks when the trouble began.
