About this book
Rome turns its strength against itself in Lucan's epic account of civil war. Written in Latin and presented here in English verse, the poem places rival commanders against a landscape of damaged cities, neglected fields and broken public trust. Its opening treats political ambition as a force that spreads through the whole state, setting personal competition beside bribery, luxury and the weakening of civic law.
Descriptions of mountains and rivers draw ancient legends into the account of military movements. A commander's speech presents the wish to keep the fighting away from Rome, while the poet measures military power against the suffering it brings. Extended comparisons, direct addresses and references to mythology shape the narrative.
