About this book

An eagle drops a struggling serpent before the Trojan army, and a disagreement over the omen becomes a test of leadership. Polydamas urges caution near the Greek fleet, while Hector insists on pressing forward. This scene gives a sense of Homer's epic in George Chapman's English translation: public speeches, divine signs and battlefield decisions unfold through long lines of verse.

The poem concerns the Trojan War, with Achilles among its central figures. Its twenty-four books are accompanied here by Chapman's dedications and addresses to the reader. In the opening pages, he argues that poetry can teach princes about virtue, justice and the government of their own passions. Readers can therefore approach the volume both as an ancient war poem and as an example of how an English translator presents its value to his own audience. The elevated language and extended arguments reward attention to how each speaker makes a case.
