About this book
Philippine Folklore Stories by John Maurice Miller presents stories that the preface calls legends that have been handed down from remote times. The contents list names, among others, The Tobacco of Harisaboqued, Quicoy and the Ongloc, The Light of the Fly and How the World Was Made. The preface says the teacher must impress upon the minds of the children that the stories are myths and are not to be given credence.
A legend of Harisaboqued says that when one man planted in the forbidden ground and nothing happened, others did the same, and one day the earth suddenly opened and Harisaboqued sprang out before them. Another story describes people on the shore gathering in terror, for all the warriors had gone to fight the invading army, and only old men and women and children remained in the villages. A story of Manuelito says many copies were made of the charm and that even to this day hundreds of people are wearing them.
