About this book

Peter the Priest has a contents list of chapter titles, among others In the Monastery, The Fools of the Castle and The Grave of Gold. The Abbot questions the two rascals about who had done the mischief; John has a black and blue spot under the eye, and Samuel a bloody scratch on his brow, but both deny any scuffle. The Abbot pronounces that John, because he has lied well, shall have twenty lashes, and Samuel, because he has lied badly, shall have thirty.

A cushion dance is described in which, to a monotonous melody, the silken cushion passes from hand to hand accompanied by an exchange of kisses. One man has so far been fortunate in avoiding the throng of guests and has not once met Magdalene.
