Huxley replies here to William Gladstone in their dispute over Gladstone's article "The Dawn of Creation and Worship". Gladstone had held that the order of creation in the first book of the Pentateuch (water, air, then land creatures) matches modern natural science. Thomas Henry Huxley sums up the dispute, restates Gladstone's three propositions and argues that the second one contradicts facts known to anyone with basic training in science. A note on the sense of the "Mosaic" narrative follows. It is the fifth essay of "Science and Hebrew Tradition".

Thomas Henry Huxley

Thomas Henry Huxley was a Victorian biologist, comparative anatomist, educator, and prominent defender of evolutionary science. Evidence as to Man’s Place in Nature, published in 1863, brought together essays comparing humans with other primates and considering fossil evidence.
