Phrosyne, a Grecian Tale and Alashtar, an Arabian Tale are two narrative poems by Henry Gally Knight (1786-1846), the English MP, traveller, and writer on medieval architecture who also published Eastern-themed verse in the manner of Byron and Moore. The two tales were issued together in 1817, at the peak of the English vogue for Greek and Levantine subjects, and draw on Gally Knight’s own travels through Greece, Egypt, and the Holy Land in the years 1810 and 1811. Phrosyne tells a Greek tragic story under Ottoman rule, while Alashtar is set among desert tribes. Both poems were respectfully reviewed in their day, although Gally Knight’s later reputation rested chiefly on his pioneering studies of Norman and Saracenic architecture in Italy and Sicily.
