About this book
In Piper in the Woods, by Philip K. Dick, Earth maintained an important garrison on Asteroid Y-3. A note says the garrison was suddenly imperiled with a biological impossibility, men becoming plants. Doctor Henry Harris asks Corporal Westerburg just why he thinks he is a plant.
When asked how he became a plant, Corporal Westerburg hesitates and says "I can't even tell you that, sir," because he promised not to. Asked whether any more cases have come up, Watts, who is grim, answers that there are two more that day, almost thirty in all, and that there are three hundred men in the station. A speaker says "The woods are harmless and the natives have nothing to teach anyone," and that "The answer is psychotherapy for the men."
