About this book
Sea songs and meditations on hope share space in Henry John Newbolt's collected verse. His author's note describes a gathering of his published poems from 1897 to 1912, drawing on four earlier volumes and adding ten pieces new to book form. The contents move from Songs of the Fleet and poems about admirals to school life, remembrance, landscape and belief, giving the collection a wider range than its opening naval titles suggest.
The middle excerpt turns toward questions of mortality and longing. In Sráhmandázi, a chief and his songman speak about love and a shadowy world beyond life. Outward Bound imagines departure from the earth as a sea passage, while Hope the Hornblower sends its riders after an elusive quarry. Repeated lines and strong rhythms give these poems a voice suited to reading aloud.
