About this book
Flowers, birds and evening light carry much of the feeling in Sarojini Naidu's English verse. Published in 1905, this collection groups its pieces under Folk Songs, Songs for Music and Poems. Its contents bring together the voices and occupations of Indian weavers, fishers and wandering singers with poems addressed to children, rulers and places. Hyderabad and the royal tombs of Golconda appear among the settings named in the volume.
The sampled poems move between affection, grief and imagined peace. A cradle song draws a child's dream from rice fields and a lotus stream; a woodland dream turns birds, stars and flowing water into figures of truth, love and peace. Elsewhere, autumn leaves echo a speaker's sadness, and fragrant spices suggest treasured memories. Readers interested in lyric form can follow how Naidu uses repetition, rhyme and sensory detail to give private feelings the rhythm of song.
