About this book

Love arrives as a quickened pulse, an awkward silence and a restless wait in Ella Wheeler Wilcox's 1883 collection. Poems of Passion gathers verse about longing, attachment, separation and the pressure that feeling places on judgment. In "Love's Language," repeated questions track emotion through the face, the eyes and the touch of hands. "Impatience" turns the slow passage of daylight into a lover's complaint, while "Communism" imagines Reason as a ruler challenged by the heart.

The poems give these inward conflicts visible shapes. "Attraction" presents a meadow and a mountain yearning across a river; "Perfectness" finds sadness in beauty because change threatens its finest moment. Wilcox's preface also explains the intentions behind several disputed poems and her decision to follow her own judgment amid conflicting criticism. Readers interested in American love poetry can follow both the direct emotional statements and the natural images used to express them.
