About this book
A view of mountains, woods and islands becomes an encounter with the limits of human perception in the opening poem, Renascence. Edna St. Vincent Millay moves from the visible horizon to an imagined awareness of other people's suffering. Published in 1923, this collection of American verse places that expansive meditation alongside shorter poems and sonnets arranged in three sections.
Natural details carry much of the emotional weight. Eel-Grass attends to rain over a bay, shells and the marks left by tides, while Elegy before Death considers flowers, birds and ordinary rural objects in relation to a person's passing. In The Blue-Flag in the Bog, a threatened flower becomes the focus of an urgent attachment to earthly life. Readers interested in poems about grief, faith and affection for the physical world will find those concerns expressed through concrete scenes and changes of scale.
