About this book
Poems by Wilfred Owen opens with an introduction by Siegfried Sassoon. Sassoon says the poems need no commendation from him, names Strange Meeting as the finest example of Owen's experiments in assonance and dissonance, and gives a short account of his life: born at Oswestry on 18 March 1893, educated at the Birkenhead Institute, a tutor near Bordeaux, then an officer of the Manchester Regiment who won the Military Cross and died on 4 November 1918 while helping his men across the Sambre Canal.
Owen's own preface begins with the line This book is not about heroes. Among the poems is Exposure, which opens with brains aching in iced east winds and sentries whispering in the silence. A note traces the 1921 reprint through later editions, including Edmund Blunden's in 1931 and Jon Stallworthy's in 1983.
