About this book
Rain, mud and broken sleep shape the soldiers' lives in Siegfried Sassoon's collection of First World War verse. Published in 1920, it brings together sixty-four poems, including twelve appearing for the first time. The opening pieces follow men on watch, carrying supplies and repairing wire, while their thoughts return to warm rooms, familiar work and English countryside. In one poem, a labouring soldier becomes an image of Christ bearing a burden.
Sassoon also turns his attention to the people who explain, manage or applaud the fighting. A cheerful general, a confident visitor to the trenches and fathers chatting at a club become subjects of bitter irony. The movement between close observation and satirical voices gives the collection its force. Readers interested in war poetry can examine how ordinary comforts, exhausting duties and public assurances sit beside one another, revealing the distance between lived experience and comfortable talk.
