About this book
Madame Pratolungo brings a sharp tongue, musical training and strong republican convictions to her account of Lucilla Finch, a blind young woman in a remote part of England. This 1872 novel by Wilkie Collins places Lucilla among twin brothers, Oscar and Nugent Dubourg, and a surgeon whose work could alter her daily life. The narrator's lively opinions give the household tensions a distinctly personal voice.
As an operation approaches, Oscar hesitates to tell Lucilla the truth, while Madame Pratolungo presses him to speak. A doctor's warning that Lucilla must remain calm after treatment makes the timing of that conversation urgent. Affection, resentment and remorse turn a disagreement into a revealing study of character. Readers interested in love stories and family rivalry will find those concerns joined to questions about sight, happiness and the difficult judgments people make about one another.
