About this book

A request for sea air unsettles the authority of a London shopkeeper in the opening of Wilkie Collins's 1879 novel. Benjamin Ronald prefers to keep his family within the familiar streets of the City, but his wife insists on taking their ailing daughter Emma to Ramsgate. The narrator presents this household dispute as the beginning of events that will later shape the life of the young Amelius.

In London, Amelius's arguments for social reform meet the demands of earning a living and preparing for marriage. After a disappointing attempt to increase his income through a lecture, he talks with his friend Rufus and sets off on a long walk. His reflections return to the city's poverty and the difficulty of defending his convictions in public debate. The novel offers readers a way to consider family authority, financial expectations and practical sympathy through private conversations and public disagreement.

About the author

Wilkie Collins

Collins wrote The Woman in White for Dickens's magazine and then The Moonstone, which is usually called the first English detective novel and gave the form Sergeant Cuff, the country-house theft and the unreliable multiple narration.
