About this book
The title says the book is studies and exercises in formal logic, including a generalisation of logical processes in their application to complex inferences. The preface to the Fourth Edition says that many of the sections have been re-written and a good deal of new matter has been introduced.
The book defines a general name as a name which is actually or potentially predicable in the same sense of each of an indefinite number of units. Prime minister of England is given as a general name, since it is applicable to more than one individual. The text adds that the name God is singular to a monotheist as the name of the Deity, general to a polytheist, or as the name of any object of worship. Exercises ask the reader to prove formally that if two propositions are equivalent, their contradictories will also be equivalent, and to examine the doctrine that a judgment can properly be denied only by another judgment of the same type.
