Preacher and Prayer is by E. M. Bounds. A line attributed to Luther says that three things make a divine: prayer, meditation, temptation. The text says the whole man lies behind the sermon, and that preaching is not the performance of an hour but the outflow of a life. The text says dead men give out dead sermons, and dead sermons kill.
The text says Paul calls on the Corinthian Church to help him, with the words Ye also helping together by prayer for us. Brainerd said that he loves to be alone in his cottage, where he can spend much time in prayer. William Bramwell is named as famous in Methodist annals for personal holiness and for his wonderful success in preaching, and for hours at a time he would pray.
