About this book
The preface urges Christians, especially pastors and preachers, to exercise themselves daily in the catechism and to continue teaching its summary of the scriptures. The preface laments that many pastors and preachers neglect the catechism, slighting both their office and the teaching for which they are responsible. The short preface describes the sermon as instruction for children and simple-minded people, explaining the knowledge that every Christian must possess.
The short preface assigns every father the duty of questioning his children and servants at least weekly to discover what they know or are learning. The discussion of property describes people quarrelling over an inheritance or real estate and dressing their claims in an appearance of legal right. The teaching about receiving the sacrament says that accepting and believing the offered words is necessary, while refusing belief leaves the offered good unenjoyed.
