About this book
Ancient Art and Ritual is by Jane Ellen Harrison. The prefatory note says the reader will find in the book no general summary or even outline of the facts of either ancient art or ancient ritual. The prefatory note says the real gist of the writer's argument lies perhaps in the intimate connection which the writer has tried to show exists between ritual and art.
The text describes a chamber dedicated to Osiris in the great temple of Isis at Philæ, where the dead Osiris is represented. Ears of corn spring from the body of the dead Osiris in this representation, and a priest waters the growing stalk from a pitcher. The text says art, whether sculpture, painting, drama, music, is of sight or hearing, and calls sight and hearing the distant senses. The text gives Zola's saying that art is the world seen through a temperament.
