About this book

Primitive time-reckoning is by Martin P. Nilsson. One passage gives names for the nights of the moon, such as hoku palemo, “sinking star,” and hoku ili, “stranded star,” and says “Thus were accomplished the thirty days and nights of the month.” The text says that in New Zealand there are various lists of the nights of the moon, and that the month is also sometimes divided into halves according to the waxing and waning moon.

A passage on counting says that when someone has seen ten harvests he is ten years old, and that whoever has slept six nights on the way has undertaken a six days’ journey. Jupiter is called “the Great Star,” Venus as the evening star is the wife of the moon, and as a morning star she is the liar, spy of the moon, or false moon, illusory moon. The Hottentots are said to possess far greater knowledge and to know the planets accurately, and Venus is “the Fore-runner of the sun.”
