About this book

The preface presents a collection of various waifs and strays, assembled while its writer was forbidden to write anything at present. The preface says the author has added The Baron’s Gloves to the volume, as a sample of the tales Jo March wrote at the beginning of her career. Joe speaks of old wounds and winter rheumatism, explaining that he must keep working while his legs hold out.

A speaker says that their daughters do not often hire out, but work at home until marriage and do not go gadding about or forget the useful things their mothers taught them. Amy rejects poverty as a reason against marriage, while Helen raises religious difference and the risk of marrying someone with different habits and beliefs.
