Rachel Ray is a warm and gently comic novel by Anthony Trollope, published in 1863. In a quiet Devonshire town, the young and open-hearted Rachel Ray falls in love with Luke Rowan, a spirited newcomer with plans to reform the local brewery, but her timid widowed mother and her grim, evangelical elder sister are set against the match and against any harmless pleasure. Around this simple courtship Trollope draws the small jealousies of provincial life, the meddling of chapel and gossip, and the quiet courage it takes for a young woman to trust her own heart.
