About this book
The book is Reminiscences of Scottish Life & Character by the late E. B. Ramsay, Dean of Edinburgh. The title page names a twenty-second edition, enlarged, with the author's latest corrections and additions and a memoir of Dean Ramsay by Cosmo Innes, 1874. The chapters cover Scottish religious feelings and observances, old Scottish conviviality, the old Scottish domestic servant, and Scottish judges.
The contents also list humour proceeding from Scottish expressions, including Scottish proverbs, and Scottish stories of wit and humour. Lord Monboddo is described attending a trial in the Court of King's Bench, where a cry was heard that the roof of the court-room was giving way, and judges, lawyers, and people made a rush to get to the door while he viewed the scene from his corner with much composure. The text speaks of less than a dozen miles of the valley of the Dee, which was the Dean's Deeside.
