About this book

A Blot in the 'Scutcheon is a book by Robert Browning. The introductory note says Robert Browning was born in London in 1812 and was educated largely by private tutors. The play is headed A Tragedy (1843), and its cast includes Mildred Tresham, Guendolen Tresham, Thorold, Earl Tresham, and Henry, Earl Mertoun.

Act I, Scene I is set in the interior of a lodge in Lord Tresham’s Park, where a retainer asks whether young Earl Mertoun is coming to ask their master’s sister’s hand. A character named Guendolen asks whether a huge tome shows some blot in the Earl’s 'scutcheon come no longer back than Arthur’s time. A character named Mildred says there is nought for her to pardon.

Robert Browning

Robert Browning (1812-1889) was an English poet who turned the dramatic monologue into his signature form, letting flawed speakers convict themselves in their own words. Long overshadowed by his wife, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, he was recognized late in life as one of the major Victorians.
