About this book
Writing as an anchoress at Norwich, Julian reflects on divine love through a series of sixteen revelations dated to 1373. Her devotional prose considers the suffering of Christ, the limits of human understanding, and the relationship between sin, mercy and hope. Prayer appears as a means of bringing the soul into union with God, while changes between spiritual light and darkness become part of learning to trust.
The passages move between personal testimony and patient reflection on what can be known about God's purposes. Julian distinguishes what she believes has been shown to her from what remains hidden, finding comfort in both. Grace Warrack's edition uses modern spelling while retaining much of the older sentence structure, and includes manuscript notes and a glossary. Readers interested in Christian contemplation can follow a voice concerned with compassion, uncertainty and the daily practice of faith.
