About this book
River Legends, or Father Thames and Father Rhine, is by Edward Hugessen Knatchbull-Hugessen Brabourne, with illustrations by Gustave Doré, and carries the date 1875. Its contents list The Great Boar of Windsor Forest, Martha's Vengeance, The Family Feud, The Giant Bramble-Buffer, The Mannikins' Castle and Sir Roderick Fowle, a legend of the olden time.
In one passage a neighbourhood has no remedy against a great Boar, and a poor woman dreams she will have the largest family the world has seen, though only one child is born, and he is no ordinary child. Elsewhere the speaker addresses Brother Rhine and mentions Mathilde, who makes quill pens from a farmer's geese, and a tradition about an ancestress who kept pigs on a Berkshire hillside. A comic verse tells of a castle holding out for months until food ran short.
