About this book
The preface explains that the work appeared later than intended because compiling the guide to streets proved more difficult than the compiler had expected. The directory records residents and occupations with addresses, including a carpenter, a leather seller, and a whitesmith who works in brass and tin plate. The description of St. George at Tombland gives a nave, chancel, side aisles, a square tower, spacious galleries, and numerous monumental inscriptions.
The account of St. Giles describes a tower containing a clock and eight bells, with a cupola and battlement around it. An advertisement identifies Sarah Lamb as a wire worker, wire weaver, and maker of corn dressing and blowing machines, offering screens, sieves, and guards.
