About this book

The history describes the story of the Slavs of Lake Ilmen and its neighbourhood as becoming largely conjectural. The account considers some degree of subjection to Varangian invaders tolerably certain, while suggesting that the communities seem to have freed themselves from foreign rule. The discussion suggests that common danger probably drew the Slavs into closer confederation, with domestic quarrels and hostility between neighbouring clans.

The military account describes a prolonged war in which a waiting game suited Ivan’s plans and nobody could force his hand. Alexander supplies promises through couriers rather than help, while neglecting his share of the agreed action. The account of the winter following the election describes ill-fed troops in the capital, prowling Kozaks, and no supplies reaching Moskva.
