About this book

Resting his eyes during the summer holidays gives seven-year-old Rollo an unexpected chance to study the world around him. A doctor advises him to set aside reading and writing for several weeks, and he sets off to help Jonas dig a drainage canal. Along the way, raspberries, insects on the brook and air bubbles in the water prompt questions about how familiar things work.

Jacob Abbott combines a children's story with lessons in natural history and cooperation. Rollo's museum becomes the focus of a small society, whose members vote for a secretary and someone to care for their cabinet of curiosities. His wish to hold office brings him into conflict with the group's needs, while his sister Mary explains the responsibilities of shared ownership. The book offers a picture of learning through observation, practical activity and conversation, with ordinary outdoor discoveries set beside the challenges of working fairly with others.
