About this book

Jacob Abbott set out in 1852 to tell how Rome came to be, and in this volume of his Makers of History series he starts long before the city itself. The first chapters follow Cadmus and the coming of letters to Greece, then the fall of Troy and the wanderings of Aeneas until he lands in Latium.

Only after that does the story reach Rhea Silvia, the vestal princess of the royal line of Alba, her twin sons raised by the shepherd Faustulus, the founding of the city, its first organization and the war with the Sabines. Along the way Abbott explains the vestal virgins and their sacred fire, the succession after Aeneas and the long line of kings named Silvius.

His preface promises to add no incident or speech to the ancient accounts, and he stops often to show how early peoples blended legend with history. The result is a calm, connected retelling of Rome's beginnings for anyone who wants the old stories in one place.
