About this book

Russia by Donald Mackenzie Wallace has a contents page listing a preface and chapters, and Chapter I is headed Travelling in Russia. The summary under the heading Chapter I, Travelling in Russia, lists railways, state interference, river communications, the Volga, Kazan, Zhigulinskiya Gori, Finns and Tartars and the Don.

The writer says he has seen many a team of animals which a third-class London costermonger would have spurned go along at the rate of ten or twelve miles an hour under no stronger incentive than the voice of the yamstchik. A man who knows how to drive the animals commonly carries a little harmless whip but rarely uses it except by waving it horizontally in the air. The animals are at one moment called little doves and at the next cursed hounds. A passage says it was explained that the world could not have been created in January, because apples are not ripe at that season; the writer found the argument in one of the polemical treatises of the Old Believers.
