About this book

Views A-foot, or Europe Seen with Knapsack and Staff, is by J. Bayard Taylor. The preface says that the book which follows requires little or no introduction. On a steamer the deck was crowded with Irish, and the travellers took a deck passage for three shillings, in preference to paying twenty for the cabin.

Carrick-a-Rede is described as a precipitous rock, separated by a yawning chasm from the shore, frequented by the catchers of sea-birds, with a narrow swinging bridge only passable in calm weather. The Wittlesbach Ancestors represent renowned members of the house of Wittlesbach, and they were cast in bronze by Stiglmaier, after the models of Schwanthaler. The writer says that entrance is denied to the tomb of Napoleon until it is finished, and that he went into the Church of the Banners, a large chapel hung with two or three hundred flags taken by the armies of the Empire.

About the author

Bayard Taylor

Bayard Taylor (1825-1878) was an American travel writer, poet, and diplomat whose dispatches for the New-York Tribune made him one of the most widely read correspondents of his day. His first book, Views A-foot (1846), described a walking tour of Europe made on almost no money, and he went on to report from California, Egypt, India, Japan, and the Arctic.
